What it does
What it is
PdfMonster is a file converter: PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and images go in, and the other formats come out. The product was planned and designed around its scope (which conversions, in what order), the approach for each format, the user flow, and where it gets hard.
Who it serves
People who need to convert between PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and image files.
Key takeaways
- A converter between PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and image files.
- The flow is upload, file-type check, convert, preview, download.
- Each format has its own approach and tooling.
- Clean tables and layout out of PDFs are the hard part, and the design treats them on their own.
Key features
A short flow
Upload, file-type check, convert, preview, download.
An approach per format
PDF, spreadsheet, Word document and image handling each have their own tooling.
Tables on their own
Clean tables and layout out of PDFs are the hard part, and the design handles them separately.
What the project covers
The parts of the product the project spans.
- Scope. Which conversions, and in what order.
- Approach. The method and tooling for each format.
- Flow. From upload to download, with a file-type check at the start.
- Hard parts. Where conversion gets difficult, starting with tables in PDFs.

What it doesn't do
- Not every conversion is equal: pulling clean tables and layout out of PDFs is the hard part, and the design treats it on its own.
